Angels spread their wings

Last year, Gerard McCarthy, a Cork man living in Dublin, was looking for a new business idea when his girlfriend suggested that he look at the possibility of setting up a female taxi service. She suggested that a service for both female drivers and passengers for safety and comfort reasons was a great idea.

“There were quite a few female drivers around Dublin, but they were either operating on their own at ranks or are attached to companies where you might have 400 drivers in a company, with 399 men,” he said.

Gerard carried out as survey of about 120 women in the Dublin area and one out of every four said they would prefer to be driven by a woman. Some female taxi drivers also said that they feel safer and more comfortable with women passengers.

According to Gerard, “It is difficult for existing taxi companies to offer a female driver upon request as their drivers tend to be overwhelmingly male. Angel Cabs simply links existing female drivers under one banner in order to make this possible.”

Now following the success of the initial pilot venture in Dublin city, the angels are spreading their wings and expanding the service into Dublin 15. In addition it is proposed to extend the service to include male and wheelchair accessible drivers.

“While the service was initially developed for passengers who feel more comfortable with female taxi drivers, the service will now operate alongside Cougar Cabs. Passengers can phone Angel Cabs for a female driver and Cougar Cabs for a standard or wheelchair accessible driver,” said Gerard.

This new service will begin in the Dublin 15 area in September and taxi drivers are currently being invited to sign up for a weekly fee of €30.
