Major
Castleknock shopping centre proposed
Uxbridge Properties Ltd., a company with strong local connections has
applied for planning permission for a site it purchased in Castleknock
Village eighteen months ago.
The company is seeking permission for a development of 128,000 sq. ft
on the site which is located behind the old post office on Castleknock
Road and running behind the petrol station and existing village and
Ashleigh shopping centres.
The plans lodged with Fingal County Council proposes the construction
of three buildings of four storeys each comprising 49 apartments, a
18,000 sq ft retail store, 15 smaller shop and restaurant units with
a combined floor area of 57,000 sq. ft, a medical centre and offices.
Parking for 366 cars will be provided in an underground car park and
for more environmentally friendly users, spaces for 210 bicycles are
also proposed.
Access to the development will be from the Castleknock Road with a new
vehicular entrance at the junction of Castleknock Road and College Road
– on the site of the present florist’s shop.
The directors of Uxbridge Properties include Conor Whelan and James
Boucher, directors of a number of bathroom supply companies in Dublin
15. Another director is local solicitor Pat Delaney and a fourth partner
is Paul Dunne who was responsible for much of the development of Mulhuddart
Village.
The application was lodged in mid July and a decision is expected by
the middle of September.
Local Fine Gael TD, Leo Varadkar and his party colleague Cllr. Eithne
Loftus have expressed serious concern about the proposals and have arranged
a public meeting of local residents to discuss the application. Speaking
to Community Voice, Deputy Varadkar said “I am
very un-impressed that this major planning application has been lodged
over the summer period while so many people are away.
“Castleknock village could certainly benefit from some sensitive
re-development. However, the plans as presented are of great concern
to us and represent an insensitive overdevelopment of a small two acre
site. I am also very concerned at the impact that the development will
have on junction at Myo’s, which is already heavily congested,”
he said.
According to Cllr Loftus, “Deputy Varadkar and I will be doing
our best to inform residents of the proposals and we have organised
a public meeting in Myo’s on Tuesday, August 5th to show the plans
to residents.”
