Castlecurragh
residents vote on management company
Residents
of Castlecurragh made a little bit of history recently when they voted
to allow the restructuring of the estate’s management company.
An extraordinary general meeting of the Castlecurragh Management Company
discussed a motion to allow house-owners resign from the management
company. The motion was overwhelmingly carried by a vote of 72 to 7
and follows three years of protest by residents against the imposition
of a private management company to charge for maintenance and services
within the estate.
The management company will however be maintained for apartment owners
in the complex.
Socialist party councillor, Ruth Coppinger, who is herself a resident
of Castlecurragh, was delighted with the outcome of the meeting. “This
has been a tortuous process,” she said. “First we had to
get the county council to provide normal services in the estate and
then we had to find a legal solution to dismantling the contracts originally
signed by residents.”
Speaking after the meeting she acknowledged that there is still a long
way to go finalise matters. “All residents must sign legal documents
allowing the process to commence, as well as paying up and clearing
the debt. However the resolutions passed tonight are a key step. By
a margin of more than 10 to 1, residents democratically decided to allow
the restructuring of the management company commence.”
According to Cllr. Coppinger, Castlecurragh’s actions are being
looked at by other residents in Fingal who are still trapped in management
company contracts and who have been given no help by the government
in terms of legislation to abolish these companies even where it is
the clear will of residents to do so.”
