| Tyrrelstown man to contest local elections Next
year’s local election ring is going to be fairly full of hats
as yet another aspiring county councillor throws his headwear into the
ring. In a clear indication of the changing demographics of the area a second member of Dublin 15’s new Irish community has declared his interest in contesting a council seat for the Mulhuddart electoral area . Ignatius Okafor first moved to Dublin 15 eight years ago and has lived in Tyrrelstown since 2004. According to Ignatius he had hoped to make a home for himself and his young family in this new community but he realised that Tyrrelstown lacked many of the necessary facilities to make the community a true home. “The lack of a proper community centre for young people, the poor transportation system, an apparent over-emphasis on the commercialisation of the area and the clear ‘divide and rule’ style of the eight management companies make any sort of decision making extremely difficult,” he says. When, at a recent public meeting in the area residents clearly expressed a need for a local person to represent and champion their interests, Ignatius decided to put himself forward as a local candidate for the next local elections. “Tyrrelstown is my community and the people are my people,” says Ignatius. “I know the problems in the area and the people’s problem are mine also.” He has promised to use all legitimate means possible to continue to press for attention to be given to the issues and problems of the people in the area because his children and family stand to benefit when things get better. Ignatius who works with the HSE at Temple Street Hospital is also the executive co-ordinator of the Mutual Cultural and Literary Exchange Centre (MCLEC).
