In amongst the grasses in the Phoenix Park

This year Dublin 15 will be well represented at the Bloom Festival in the Phoenix Park over the June bank holiday weekend. Rebecca Thorn (centre) and some of her volunteer friends

Local gardening enthusiast Rebecca Thorn from Rusheeny Court has had her entry “In amongst the grasses” accepted. Together with a team of volunteer friends including her boyfriend Eamonn, Rebecca is presently hard at work preparing her show garden for the opening on Thursday 28th May.

According to Rebecca ‘In amongst the grasses’ is a garden intended for the sole purpose of relaxation. In today's busy world it can be hard to stop and take a moment for ourselves - something we are all entitled to. This garden has been designed as a meditative space to escape to and enjoy a moment of un-distracted peace.”

Rebecca’s garden has sunken seating putting the user's eye line level with the surrounding grasses and hiding them away safe amongst the plants. Inspired by meadows and sand dunes the edges are soft, lines are fluid and planting is informal. “Ornamental grasses bring movement and sound to the space; the rippling and whispering of the breeze amongst the grass is both calming and hypnotic,” says Rebecca.Rebecca gives instructions on how to dig a hole

Her career path to garden design has been an unusual one. She studied fine art sculpture at Leeds University in the UK and graduated in 2002, but she acknowledges that “although art and sculpture are both subjects of which I am fond I knew about halfway through my degree that I was studying the wrong course but I just didn't know what I could do about it.”

Rebecca moved to Dublin 15 in 2005 and she works as a customer service administrator for vazumo.com. She has been pursuing an interest in gardening and garden design and submitted her proposals to the Bloom festival organiser and was delighted to have them accepted.

Bloom will open to the public in the grounds of the Phoenix Park Visitor’s Centre from 11 a.m. on Thursday 28th May and continues until 6 p.m. It will continue on Friday to Monday and will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

Admission for the first two days is €20 for adults and €25 on Sat – Mon.

However there is a €5 reduction on that price for people who book tickets in advance on the internet and in all cases children go free.
