Making books in the library

Last year teachers from a number of local primary schools were invited to take part In a series of workshops in Blanchardstown Library. Cllr. Ciaran Byrne, Mayor of Fingal speaking at the Make a Book presentation with Betty Boardman, Senior librarian and children’s author Terry Hassett Henry

The workshops were facilitated by children’s author Terry Hassett Henry and who has many years experience of working on creative writing projects with adults and children. She worked with the teachers to help them develop their skills to encourage their pupils to write books using the theme of myths and legends from around the world.

According to Senior Librarian, Betty Boardman, the aim of the Make a Book project was to give primary school children the opportunity to write and illustrate their own books. “Students from different ethnic backgrounds were asked to explore stories from their own culture and traditions and to tell that story in their own words. The project helps to promote the positive recognition of cultural and linguistic diversity in the Dublin 15 area,” she said.

Pupils from three local schools took part in the project – St Francis Xavier, Roselawn (1st and 2nd class) Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa, Huntstown (3rd class) and St. Patrick’s Diswellstown (3rd class).

Over 120 pupils attended a presentation in the Library recently to mark the completion of the project where they were all presented with certificates by Cllr. Ciaran Byrne, mayor of Fingal.

Speaking at the presentation Ms. Hassett Henry said “this is one of the most enjoyable projects I work on each year. I never know what is going to come or what is going to happen in the book until the children write it.”

Ms. Boardman also thanked all of the teachers who took part. “Much of their work on this project took place in their own time,” she said. She also thanked the Europe Direct project based in the library which financially supported the initiative.
