New
integration initiative
Dublin 15 has one of the highest population concentrations of immigrants
in Ireland with some areas having a population of over one third non-Irish
nationals.
As a result, integration has always been a problem for the new communities.
However, Crosscare, the social care agency of the Catholic Archdiocese
of Dublin with an outreach office on Main Street, Blanchardstown in
the former Capuchin oratory, is organising a new programme designed
to match individual immigrants living in the Dublin 15 area with their
Irish neighbours.
“I wish I had a programme like this when I first came to Ireland.
It would have made the settling in process much easier,” says
Jackie Akello, a volunteer with Crosscare and originally from Uganda.
“There is nothing like one-to-one assistance in trying to navigate
life in a new country.”
Ms. Akello will be involved in rolling out the programme and explaining
how the programme will operate. “We are calling for applications
from immigrants and more established residents of the Dublin 15 area,”
she says. “We will look at people’s interests and needs,
train suitable participants, introduce them to each other, help them
to come to a mutual agreement and support them over the three month
period.
“This programme is a way of creating forums or spaces for people
from these groups to come together, at the most fundamental level, one
to one relationships.”
