Book
week in Scoil Choilm
National Book Week was marked in some style by one of Dublin 15’s
newest schools, Scoil Choilm in Porterstown.
With a series of events aimed at pupils and parents, the school used
the opportunity to further underpin its unique relationship with its
community. “The main objective of the week is to try to promote
reading among the whole school community – children, teachers
and parents,” said principal Treasa Lowe. "This is all about
enjoying books and we have such a rich diversity of stories among our
families to tap into.”
Caitríona McErlain who teaches senior infants, co-ordinated much
of the week’s activity. “We had a book fair in one of our
classrooms for the entire week and all of the teachers read stories
to children from different classes. We also had parents in to read stories
from their home countries,” she said.
Another day was designated as “dress up day” when children
came to school dressed up as their favourite characters. “We had
a lot of Harry Potters in the school that day,” laughed Caitríona.
“We also had a coffee morning for parents where we talked about
books and how to read to their kids and develop their own reading skills.”
The children also learned about the wider world of books as well with
classes on writing their own stories, illustrating their favourite books
and making book markers.
“Next week we will also be taking our senior infants to Blanchardstown
Library where they will all be getting their library cards for the first
time, so between our own library in the school and the public library
they will always have books to read,” said Caitríona.
