Promoting
Russian culture
One
of the problems that we hear from the new communities is that they need
to be introduced to Irish ways and culture. Without proper integration,
they remain isolated and cut off from society.
However, for one group, the process of assimilation has perhaps gone
a little bit too far!
“Our primary objective is to instil the Russian language and its
culture on Russian children who are resident here in Ireland,”
explains Svetlana Usovich who founded the Rainbow Language School in
Huntstown last year. “With the influx of Russian people into Ireland
over the last decade, the children are speaking English and losing their
identity with their original homestead. Our school aims to incorporate
many different facets of the Russian culture.”
As part of this goal, Svetlana organised a very successful family day
at the Huntstown Community Centre recently to celebrate the end of winter
and the start of spring. With over a hundred people attending, including
many from the Irish community, the day was a great success.
Among the many events was a play by the children on the arrival of spring;
food and pancakes made from original Russian recipes; songs about the
end of winter; and an enthusiastic mini-Olympics!
“We would like to expand our school and begin teaching art and
crafts, including a sports day for the children and having a summer
school where the children can interact with other Russian children,”
says Svetlana.
“Our primary focus is for the children to be bilingual and to
become involved in both Irish and Russian culture.”
