Learning committee skills

Voluntary organisations are the backbone of any community and in times of recession their importance is even greater.

Every week thousands of local community activists attend their local community centres, sports clubs and a myriad of other meeting places throughout the area to sit at committee meetings and to organise, manage and supervise local activities and projects.

To provide local volunteers with the skills they need to use their time and talents effectively, Fingal County Council is organising a series of free committee skills workshops over the coming months. Four of these workshops will be held in Blanchardstown Library with the first workshop scheduled for Wednesday 31st March.

According to a council spokesperson, “the workshops are particularly aimed at community volunteers anxious to get involved with their local residents association or community group but who could benefit from skills training and knowledge of best practice.”

The workshops will cover topics such as roles and responsibilities of community groups, how to be an effective chair/secretary and how best to organise meetings.

The Dublin 15 workshops will take place in the Library on Wednesday 31st March, Wednesday 30th June, Wednesday 29th September and Wednesday 15th December. Each workshop will start at 7 p.m. and admission is free.

Each workshop can hold 14 participants, and as places are strictly limited, early booking is advisable.
