Enjoying our heritage

Established just over a year ago, Fingal South-West Heritage Society is going from strength to strength With two noted local historians, visiting authors and locals with stories to share, the last twelve months have provided members with a whirlwind tour of Dublin 15.Writer and historian Pat Liddy

Covering the areas of Blanchardstown, Castleknock, Mulhuddart and Clonsilla, Fingal South-West Heritage Society offers members an unique opportunity to learn and share memories, photos, concerns and stories about our community.

Highlights from the 2009 programme have included talks on local folklore, the Ashtown Ambush, the Luttrells of Luttrellstown, the Rebellion of 1798 in Clonsilla, the Battle of Castleknock, Mulhuddart Medieval Church, Judge Wylie of Clonsilla and William Rowan Hamilton and Dunsink.

Field trips included visits to Farmleigh and a most enjoyable and informative walk along the Royal Canal led by historian Pat Liddy.

The Society have further “raised the bar” for 2010 with even more outings planned.

The first half of this year's programme of events will include a trip to the Titanic exhibition in Citywest, a visit to Aras an Úachtarain, a guided walk along the Royal Canal (the tragedy of the Deep Sinking) as well as a visit to Shackleton Gardens at Beech Park and St. Mary's Church in Clonsilla.

A full series of monthly talks is also planned including the history of Rathborne Candles, Dublin Accents & Dialects together with a talk aimed at newcomers to the area entitled “an introduction to Fingal South-West.”

According to Christine Moore, PRO of the society, “we are currently in the process of compiling a photographic archive of the Dublin 15 area and would be delighted to hear from anyone with copies of old photos, prints or paintings showing the locality.”

Talks take place on the last Saturday of each month at 2.30 p.m. in Blanchardstown Library and the various outings are scheduled for mid-month. “Our emphasis is all about enjoying our heritage,” says Christine, “so come along and see where it takes you.”
