New
methadone dispensing centre planned
Dublin 15’s methadone dispensing services are currently quite
fragmented with local clinics operating out of substandard conditions
in some cases.
For some time the HSE has been seeking to establish a “one stop
shop” for addiction services in the area and it now looks as if
this proposal will finally come to fruition with the acquisition of
the former BOND premises in Coolmine Industrial Estate.
The proposal is being welcomed by local drugs activists who have long
argued for the provision of services in a properly finished and resourced
building.
According to Bríd Walsh, co-ordinator of the Blanchardstown Local
Drugs Task Force, “we have for a long time been advocating for
a dedicated centre in the area for those who wish to move from problematic
drug use. It looks as if these plans will finally come to fruition with
the establishment of a dedicated best practise centre where those who
wish to regain their capacity for daily life and move from problematic
drug use can access these services under one roof.”
It is hoped that the new service will provide a comprehensive mix of
medical and social supports for clients including addiction counselling,
GP support, addiction psychiatry and specialised rehabilitation services.
“The Task Force agree that this service should provide an opportunity
for people to receive supports in a respectful and supportive environment,”
said Bríd.
