People
power wins the day for two local estates
One
of the lower profiles issues that has been bubbling under for some time
locally has finally concluded with the news that Fingal County Council
has dropped proposals to provide a pedestrian walkway through the Summerfield
and Springlawn estates to the Blanchardstown Centre due to “residents’
objections which render it non-viable”.
Speaking to Community Voice, Alan Power chairman of
the Summerfield Residents’ Association welcomed the move saying
that the residents were very pleased that plans for a gateway from the
estate onto the Snugborough Road had been shelved.
He said “we have had a very lengthy concern about the effects
of the extra traffic in the area that would have been created by the
proposals and the implications of that for child safety on the roads
in the estate.
“There also would have been a concern about other associated problems
such as possible litter, vandalism or anti-social behaviour late at
night,” he added.
Labour Party Cllr Patrick Nulty also has welcomed the decision, declaring
it “a victory for common sense and people power.” He said
it showed that where communities get organised and active on an issue
“they can make a real difference in the democratic process.”
A statement from Fine Gael representatives Leo Varadkar TD and Cllr.
Eithne Loftus described the amendments to the plan as a “genuine
exercise in local democracy” with over 130 residents making a
submission to the council on the broader plans.
