Restoration
of old Post Office
Castleknock residents passing the old post office building on Main Street
in recent weeks were alarmed to see a building hoarding erected at the
front of this old protected structure. Indeed some went so far as to
ring the construction company involved – Castleknock Construction
– to voice their disquiet.
However as Eugene Garrihy, director of Castleknock Construction, was
at pains to point out the proposed work involves a high quality restoration
of the building to its former state after many years during which it
has remained vacant. Indeed all of the people involved in the project
are local to the area and committed to the restoration project. Mr.
Garrihy is as long-time resident of Castleknock while the project architect,
Peter Rafter lives around the corner from the post office on College
Road. The owner of the building is Paul Sullivan, a dentist with a long
established practise in Castleknock Village.
According to Peter Rafter, “this is a protected structure and
we have prepared all our plans in conjunction with the county council’s
conservation architects. We are retaining all of the beautiful red brickwork,
the old windows ceilings and floors in our restoration. In fact we are
even retaining the old wooden counter from the post office as a reception
desk for the new surgery.”
The old post office which was operated by Miss Meade will be well-known
to older residents of the area. When the restoration work is completed,
they will be able to book their dental appointments over the same counter
at which they collected their children’s allowance many years
ago.
