Dublin
Diving Club Divers meet world champion
Irish Divers from the Dublin Diving Club recently competed at the prestigious
Armada cup in Plymouth, England, alongside Tom Daley who represented
Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics, At that time he was 14 years
old and was Britain's youngest competitor suggesting a massive talent
with remarkable prospects for the future. The Plymouth club is
home to Tom who at age of 15 years old gained the title of World 10
metre platform diving champion.
Despite not bringing any medals home on this occasion, this competition
and experience in general was of invaluable benefit for the young Dublin
Diving Club competitors for the development of their diving careers.
Two of the girls pictured with Tom Daley are Vivienne and Francesca
who live in the Clonsilla area of Dublin 15. Ricardo Gutierrez who hails
from Mexico is Head Diving Coach at the Dublin Diving Club and coincidentally,
it is Ricardo’s brother Fito Gutierrez who coaches the diving
team at Tom Daley’s club in Plymouth.
Dublin Diving Club, which bases its club sessions at the National Aquatic
Centre in Blanchardstown trains not only competitive divers but has
a thriving ‘Learn To Dive’ programme for both children and
adults. The club has in excess of 70 members and is currently Ireland's
biggest diving club. Anyone who is confident swimming in deep water
and is over 6 years old is welcome to join the lessons and the diving
club.
The club’s coaches are all competitive divers and include David
Linehan, silver medallist in the 2009 European Masters Championships,
Maeve O’Callaghan, current 1 metre, 3 metre and platform national
ladies champion, Marie Ahern and Jennifer Barry. Two other divers on
the Dublin Diving Club coaching team Vlada Shapoval - European masters
gold medallist in 1 metre and 3 metre events - and Andrew Gaw are also
in the process of completing their final level 2 coaching assessments.
