Coolmine
judo club in the medals in Kilkenny
Judo certainly qualifies as a minority sport in this country but like
so many of these sports which are lower profile than most it has its
remarkably dedicated adherents. None more so than locally in Dublin
15 at Coolmine Judo Club.
Recently a squad of 12 from Coolmine Judo club travelled to Kilkenny
to take part in the fourth Kilkenny Open. It was the first competition
of the year for many of the kids and adults taking part and what a start
to the year it was for the club.
Coolmine had two minors competing at the event. Max Trigub won a gold
medal in the -34kg category winning all his fights by ippon. This was
followed by Kerri Gibbons again taking gold in 45kg and yet again all
fights won by ippon.
With those early successes, the cadets section then had a lot to live
up to, but Adam Kelly got them off to a flying start winning all his
fights to take gold in -50kg. This was followed by Sarah O'Gara
taking gold in the -40kg. Zoe O'Gara then followed her sister to
take gold in -57kg.
The only junior competing on the day was Keith Rogers who put up a brave
fight to take silver in -73kg, then a gold in the Junior Open event,
before competing with the seniors in the team event and managing to
add another silver medal to his collection.
The men traveling managed to rack up an impressive array of medals
too. Gold in -100kg; Silver in -90kg; Silver in -81kg; Bronze in -73kg;
Silver in the masters event before taking home a Silver and Bronze in
the team events. Coach Kieran Foley said it was a great result for the
club.
