Young Peregrines flying high

The under-13 girls at St Peregrine’s GAA club have enjoyed a remarkable period of success in recent times capturing titles in both ladies football and camogie. There promotion to Division 2 football came as recently as the 2008-09 season but they have showed great ambition to not merely be happy with promotion but to press on and achieve further at the higher level. St Peregrine’s U.13 girls - creating waves in both football and camogie

In early February they played their final game of the under-13 football season and won through to secure the Division 2 title and promotion to Division 1. As is the case with a lot of clubs the team has managed to participate at the highest level possible despite having the slimmest of margins in terms of panel numbers in both disciplines.

The team’s manager, Catherine Murphy, is effusive in her praise of the team’s efforts. “The team’s strength lies in the fact that everyone on the pitch works so hard all the time. The rearguard of goalkeeper Sarah supported by a formidable defence of Niamh, Katie, Kayleigh, Aimee, Leanne and Rebecca made life very difficult for opposing forwards.”

She said “our midfielders Danielle Pugh and Niamh Mangan had the skill, determination and fitness to dominate the middle of the park most of the time which was a massive bonus. The half forward line of Megan Leech, Lauren Beggs and Erica frequently proved too much for defences twisting, turning and scoring at will, whilst the inside forwards Marisa and Sarah M provided vital support to full-forward Lisa who hit the back of the net countless times this season.

“This team will now go into Division 1 in March so fingers crossed we do as well as we have done to date” she added.

Prior to Christmas the girls secured the under-13 Division 3 camogie title having encountered some tough opposition along the way. They now face into Division 2 knowing that things will be a lot tougher. But as they have shown in the case of their promotion in football, the higher grade should pose little fears for them.
