Setanta sprints to glory

The West Leinster Schools' Cross-Country Championships were held recently in the Phoenix Park and was the first year for new school on the - block Coláiste Pobail Setanta in Ongar - to enter a team.

This new school opened its doors for the first time in September 2008 and at present has 135 pupils. Last year the school was not in a position to enter a team due to the small pupil numbers and there was no-one with athletics experience to train them. The Coláiste Pobail Setanta Athletics team: Back Row (L-R): Hayley McCann, Anthony Dignam, Seán Noble, Darragh Cummins, George Dovgulevich, Joseph Kuye, Carl Pagayonan, Jeff Andrews, Zach Andrews, Junior Adeyemi, Aron Mulhall, Ruben Miranda. Front row: Venz. Pagayonan, Ciaran Collins, Ahmed Abushaban, Eoin Murphy

But this year proved different and the school’s all-male athletics team has been training hard for the event since January. The team made history for the school by winning its first ever medal. In the boy’s 1500m race Setanta’s Seán Noble finished in a very impressive 2nd position out of 170 competitors. Other members of the team who also finished in notable positions include Joseph Kuye (8th) and Ruben Miranda (17th).

Their coach Hayley McCann was delighted with the school’s performance. “The majority of the team have no experience whatsoever in long distance running. To complete the race is a credit in itself but to actually have someone placed in the top three is outstanding.” She added that the athletics’ future for Coláiste Pobail Setanta is “promising”.

The school claims that it is founded on the values of Misneach, Bród, and Dilseacht – courage, pride and loyalty – derived no doubt from the remarkable mythological inspiration of its eponymous hero. The early exploits of the school on the athletics field would seem to suggest that its competitors are displaying these qualities in no small measure.
