Boxes wanted
Sometimes
kids get all the fun!
On the last weekend in June, Draíocht’s main auditorium
will be transformed into a giant indoor city, courtesy of a horde of
small children using cardboard boxes as their raw material.
The project – called We Built this City - is being coordinated
by Polyglot Puppet Theatre from Australia who are making their first
visit to Ireland.
“We Built this City is a very happy project, where adults and
kids work side by side with equal enthusiasm, to build amazing structures
in great harmony and in the spirit of experimentation and adventure,”
says Polyglot’s Shalini Nair. “It's a great opportunity
for families and children to play together, creating free form architectural
delights in a totally immersive play space.
“And at the end of the event the city is trampled underfoot like
a giant sandcastle, with everyone joyously crushing the boxes. It's
the most fun you'll ever have!”
There will be five performers and a local DJ providing musical inspiration
for the teams of children who will be the real creative force for the
city. In this show the children and their adults drive all the building
and all the ideas and come up with incredible constructions.
The Polyglot helpers are characters in the space, there to make sure
the kids and families are having a great time, wearing hard hats and
behaving in a most ridiculous way.
To assist in the project, Draíocht have to collect 2,500 boxes
of all shapes and sizes. They can be flat or still in boxed shape and
they can be any size, small, medium or large.
They can be any colour, but they can’t take any boxes with alcohol
or cigarette branding. And they need them by 21st June!
And as an incentive, everyone who gives them boxes will be offered free
tickets to a forthcoming Draíocht event.
We Built this City plays Draíocht’s main auditorium on
Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June, times vary.
