Books for the housebound

Fingal Housebound Library Service was formally established in 2001 as part of a commitment to equality of access for all. In particular, it was designed to cater for those who for reasons of age, incapacity or illness are unable to leave home, hospital or other care facilities to access a public library in Fingal.Lynda Beasley,

The service is for the elderly individual who may be home-bound or incapacitated. It is also for the individual who due to incapacity or illness has difficulty accessing their local Fingal Library branch. This service also operates to facilities such as nursing homes, hospitals, residential and non residential care facilities as well as rehabilitation centres.

“We operate a delivery service a number of times a week through which we can bring your local library to you!” explains coordinator Lynda Beasley. “Once you have made contact with us we will take a note of your address and contact details. We will also ask you about your reading habits—whether you like to read or listen to books, whether you prefer normal or large-print formats and we will then make arrangements to deliver these items to you.

“We will also collect any items you wish to return to us.”

The Library has a wide selection of fiction (popular fiction, best-sellers, romance, westerns, crime and mystery) as well as non-fiction (biographies, health, Irish interest, history etc.). Many of these books are available in audio-book or large-print format—ideal for those with any sight problems.

It also has a large selection of audio-visual material— tapes, CDs and DVDs and as many items as the customer requires can be loaned out at any one time, within reason. This is a free service as part of the Fingal County Council Library service.
