The stage is set

As the incredibly talented young people of Stagezone Theatre School complete their ninth year, all the focus is naturally on the end of year extravaganza for which this company has become renowned.

As usual, the show will be split between the age groups, with the younger ones performing extracts from Cinderella; the 9 – 12 year olds will get down to the bare necessities of life with Jungle Book; while the older stars of the future will get to grips with Hairspray and other modern West End musicals.

This is of course a huge logistical operation with over 200 children having to learn their lines and rehearse the songs; the dance moves all have to be expertly choreographed by the indefatigable Marie Barber; and the costumes need to be bought, hired, made up or borrowed.

Drawing all the strings together again is Gladys Coyle, once more plunging herself headfirst into the mad, mad world of preparing for a show.

“Yes, it’s a lot of hard work,” she admits when I finally caught up with her.

Being Gladys of course, one major enterprise at a time is never enough and she was flying out of the door for some final rehearsals in Holding Court Theatre’s Finders Keepers at the Axis in Ballymun. “But everybody is so enthusiastic about the shows. When they are full of excitement like this, it really keeps you going. And right now, the excitement is steadily building.

“Its hard to believe that next year will be our tenth year in production. I have no idea yet how we’re going to celebrate that milestone. When I look back over the years, I really have been blessed to work with such a marvellous group of young people.

Some of them have of course been with us the whole time. Robyn Poole, for example (she played the role of the bawdy Mme. Thénadier in Les Mis) is now training in medical college. I told her she can look after us all when we collapse from exhaustion!”

Stagezone on Stage plays four performances at Draiocht’s main auditorium on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th June at 2pm and 7.30pm.

Tickets are €18 / €16.
