SciFest a great success
SciFest,
the prestigious one day festival of science that took place in ITB last
month, has been hailed a great success by organisers.
Over two hundred students from thirteen schools all over Dublin took
part in the celebration of all things scientific. The festival included
amongst its itinerary a competition and exhibition of projects, a selection
of science talks, science demonstrations in the college laboratories
and a prize-giving ceremony.
“SciFest is a fun and exciting way to encourage an interest in
science at school level,” said event coordinator Sheila Porter.
“Not only does it provide an occasion to celebrate achievement
and a job well done but it is also an opportunity to encourage active
and collaborative learning. This helps stimulate students’ interest
in science and enables then to apply scientific concepts to real-life
scenarios.”
The festival has continued to go from strength to strength with a record
number of entries this year. The rapid increase in participation in
the competition is an indication of the interest and enthusiasm among
students and teachers in the investigative approach to teaching and
learning science.
St. Josephs College Lucan won the Intel Best Project Award with their
project “Our teachers; talking themselves to death.” Elizabeth
Hannigan from Coolmine Community School under the supervision of teacher
Michael Gaffney won second prize in the Physical Science category for
her project “Spilt milk and the Coanda effect.”
“It is exciting to see the creativity and enthusiasm for science
among Irish second-level students at SciFest 2010,” said Peter
Brabazon, programme director. “The competition epitomises the
skills we seek to instill in students across the country in terms of
collaborative learning and critical thinking.
It is also an effective model linking education and industry, with the
participation of ITB and the support of Intel and other sponsors.”
