Muslim women raise funds for hospice
by Doaa Morsy

For the fourth year in a row the Muslim Women Together (MWT) group has helped to raise funds for different charities benefiting the Dublin 15 area.

The group consists of Muslim women originally from different countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Bosnia, Nigeria, Iraq, Malaysia, Somalia, and Palestine but now living with their families in Ireland. Through our volunteering work the group members aim to set an example in co-existence and positive integration into Irish society. This year we have organised an International Food Festival to raise funds for the new St. Francis Hospice Blanchardstown. The hospice will provide a specialist palliative care service to people with advanced cancer, motor neuron disease and HIV/AIDS, as well as giving support to their families and friends.

This year’s festival was held recently in Castleknock College where everyone who attended enjoyed delicious eastern food, desserts, and exotic fruit drinks from nine different countries which was prepared and cooked by more than twenty women from the group.

Guests at the event also enjoyed an exhibition which included photos showing celebrations of the Muslim Festivals, the traditions of weddings and the clothes that brides wear on their wedding day in different Muslim countries. The hall was decorated with Arabic Calligraphy pictures while the projector was showed films of Islamic music and songs.

The event was a great success with a large number of guests. Many of our Irish guests were coming to the food festival for the second or third time and bringing more family members and friends with them this time.

Many thanks to all our guests who donated generously and enabled us to raise €2,170 for the hospice.

We hope that fundraising for a different charity every year will provide us with an opportunity to give something back to the community. We also believe that differences in culture, religion or race should not have an effect on what benefits all citizens living in the same country.
