Dublin’s first moonwalk

You don’t have to travel 400,000 kilometres across space to walk on the moon this month. St Francis Hospice is organising an imaginative evening for its first hospice midsummer moon (lit) walk along the edge of Dublin Bay on Saturday 19th June.

In an historic undertaking, supporters of Dublin’s four hospices - Raheny, Harold’s Cross Blackrock and Blanchardstown - will walk from both sides of Dublin Bay to meet in the middle for a moonlight celebration.

The friends of the two Northside hospices will start their 5 mile journey from the Causeway at Bettyglen and follow the coastal road to the chq building at George’s Dock. Meanwhile the southside contingent will follow a route from Blackrock Park also ending at the chq building.   According to Dee Kinane of St. Francis Hospice, “this is a historic coming together of the Dublin hospices and the common meeting point at George’s Dock will bring us all together to unify and spread the hospice message in Dublin and beyond.”

It had originally been planned that Dublin 15 walkers would commence their walk from the Blanchardstown area but roadworks and other logistical problems have meant that the D15 walkers will now walk from Bettyglen with their Raheny counterparts.

All walkers will enjoy a celebratory conclusion to their moonlit stroll with the provision of musical entertainment and refreshments at the chq building.

The cost of participation is €50 for an individual or €75 for a family. All children taking part must be at least 13 years of age. The walk will commence at 9 p.m. and the evening will conclude at midnight with a minute’s silence for all those using hospice care, both past and present.

Full details are available from the hospice (tel. 832 7535) or online at www.moonwalk.ie

According to Dee, “this will be a hugely symbolic occasion which we hope will not only raise funds for both hospices but also heighten awareness of the great need for hospice services nationwide.”
