President’s
awards at Riversdale
The
President's Award is a scheme set up by the President to acknowledge
exceptional achievement by young people between 15 and 25 years. Split
up into gold, silver and bronze awards, the fact that only 50 people
nationally receive the top award every year shows how demanding they
are.
In order to achieve a bronze award the young person has to take on four
major challenges in the areas of personal skill development, voluntary
work, physical fitness and go on a 35km Adventure trip. The award
takes six months to complete and the silver challenges take double
that, requiring practically one year to meet all the criteria.
Last month, thirty students from Riversdale Community College received
their bronze and silver President's Awards. They had all helped
every week in many local community groups including the Order
of Malta, homework clubs, youth clubs and sports clubs and were
great role models for younger teenagers. The group developed a
wide range of skills between them - music, entrepreneurship and
first aid being the most popular.
“Some of the silver award recipients are now going for gold,
which will take them about three years,” said Riversdale’s
awards coordinator Susan Robinson. “They hope to volunteer in
Africa as part of their challenge. We wish them well in their efforts
and congratulate them and the school on their achievements to date.”
For the record, the successful silver award recipients were: Fola Asarakun,
Aaron Buckely, Brian Bustamente, Nicole Colmey, Dean Farrell, Carla
Halligan, Craig Kelly, Naomi Marie Rose, Ian Moran, Kenneth Page, Claire
Smith, Gavin Smullen, Alexandru Sulea and Patrick Whelan.
