| Brigid’s youths edged out by Parnells Parnells 1-13 St Brigid’s 2-3 Parnells
proved too strong for St Brigid’s in the U16 Football B Championship
Plate Final played recently at Coolock. The home side – a division
ahead of the Brigid’s lads – put in a storming opening half
to take a decisive lead which simply left Brigid’s with too much
to do in an evenly contested second-half. The game, played in glorious sunshine, started cautiously and it was the home side who registered the first score. Brigid’s responded well, however, and created a great goal chance but they failed to convert and it was to prove costly. The Parnell’s midfield pairing began to dominate, setting up a consistent platform for their forwards, which allowed them to gradually ease ever further ahead. It took Brigid’s 20 minutes to register their first and only score of the half, with O’Reilly finishing off a fine passing move. Parnells, though, responded with a goal and a couple more points. By half-time, the scoreboard was looking very ominous with the home side emphatically ahead by 1-9 to 0-1 and a serious trimming beckoned for the Dublin 15 lads. But the second-half was a very different affair as the Russell Park outfit started to play with pride and passion and finally began to do themselves justice. The introduction of substitutes Rogers and McAnerin livened up the visitors and Henry and Somani, in particular, started to drive forward from the half-backs with O’Sullivan’s roving role was proving a handful for the opposition. After an early Rogers’ point, Brigid’s were awarded a penalty, which O’Reilly calmly converted. Although Parnell’s responded with a couple of points, a McAnerin score narrowed the gap further. Parnell’s dug deep however and managed to withstand heavy Brigid’s pressure. Five minutes from time, Cahill found the net, not long after his introduction as a substitute. It was to be the game’s last score but was not enough to prevent defeat though a game second-half display has certainly restored pride for the Dublin 15 side. St.
