Castleknock
schoolgirls win Cumann na mBunscol title
St
Brigid’s Castleknock 3-3 Mary Help of Christians 0-2
St.Brigid’s
National School maintained their winning tradition in the Allianz Cumann
na mBunscol competitions by capturing the Corn Uí Phuirséil
at Croke Park recently. The girls beat their near neighbours from the
Navan Road on a scoreline of 3-3 to 0-2.
St.Brigid’s got a perfect start when Anna Greville raised the
green flag as early as the third minute. This settled the Castleknock
girls and just minutes later Catherine Leahy doubled their advantage
with a second goal.
The Navan Road girls then had a spell where they put severe pressure
on the St. Brigid’s goal but great defending - in particular from
Ellen Maher and Alex Griffin - meant that a point from Ciara Carolan
was the only score conceded during their opponents ‘purple patch’.
Just before half-time, Niamh O’Neill pointed a free to leave the
score at 2-1 to 0-1 and the Castleknock school in a strong position.
In the second-half, St.Brigid’s forwards Ciara Griffin and Ellie
Wilde continued to wreak havoc. A goal from Wilde, and further pointed
frees from O’Neill, extended the lead. Still Mary Help of Christians
battled with Carolan (who scored a late free) and Ciara Sweeney prominent.
However, with O’Neill and Greville influential, the silverware
was inexorably on its way to Castleknock and the team managed by teachers
Kevin Doyle and Frances Doran.
